Santiago 02nd April 2014: A major earthquake of magnitude 8.2 hit off the northern Chilean coast on Tuesday.
The quake struck about 8:46 p.m. local time, some 60 miles northwest of Iquique with depth of 12.5 miles.
Five people including four men and one woman died — two due to heart attacks and three crushed to death.
The quake also caused landslides that blocked roads, knocked out power for thousands, damaged an airport and provoked fires that destroyed several businesses.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued several tsunami warnings for Chile, Ecuador and Peru and all of them were canceled today morning.
An estimated 800,000 people were evacuated from the region.
President Michelle Bachelet declared a state of emergency in the region.
